Fire breaks out in the South African Parliament in Cape Town The world

Published on

A huge fire broke out in the seat of the South African Parliament in Cape Town this morning (2).

Preliminary reports indicate the blaze broke out on the third floor of the building, which began in the office space and spread to a gym, said Jean-Pierre Smith, a member of the mayoral committee in Cape Town who is responsible for safety and security.

“The roof caught fire, and so did the National Assembly building,” a city security spokesman said. He added that the fire was not under control and there were cracks in the walls of the building.

The fire started at around 3:30 am (GMT) on the floors of the building.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and no injuries have been reported.

The building in Cape Town has three floors, one of which is the oldest, built in 1884. The new parts are dated to the 1920s and 1980s.

A huge fire broke out in Table Mountain near the coastal town of Cape Town in April, destroying the library treasures at the University of Cape Town.
