Brazil takes office as a member of the UN Security Council

On January 1, 2022, Brazil assumes its 11th term as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

The country was selected along with 9 other countries to establish the rotating part of the Council for the next two years. Brazil will take over the presidency in July this year.

Inn NoteItamarathi said the country would prioritize “prevention of conflicts and peaceful resolution, effectiveness of peace missions and humanitarian response to international crises.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it will prioritize “integration of peace through activities aimed at promoting development, respect for human rights and greater participation of women in promoting international peace and security.”

The statement said Brazil would seek to improve the council’s dealings with other UN bodies and regional bodies involved in conflict resolution.

The UN Security Council is made up of 15 countries, five of which are permanent and the other 10 are elected for two years.

According to Article 23 Charter of the United Nations, Permanent members of the Security Council: United States, Russia, France, United Kingdom, China.

In addition to Brazil, the countries selected for the 2022 and 2023 beanies are Albania, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates. They join councils in India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway.
