“We are here to claim our rights. We are not afraid.” Fifty women demonstrated in Herat, Afghanistan, on Thursday, September 2, before the unveiling of the new Taliban regime.

“Education, employment and security are our rights.”, These protesters sang in unison, and some of them raised placards in honor of women’s rights.

The protest took place in Herat, the capital of western Afghanistan, near the Iranian border, known as the Liberals in Afghanistan. At least one protester wore a burqa, while others wore a simple veil covering his hair, ears and neck.

“We are here to assert our rights”, One of the protesters, Fareshta Taheri, explained that the AFP had arrived by phone. “Women and girls fear that the Taliban will not allow them to go to school and work.”

“We’m even willing to wear the burqa if they tell us, but we want women to go to school and work.”, Explains artist and photographer Fareshta Taheri. “Right now, most women working in Herat are at home in fear and uncertainty.”

The Taliban claim to have changed after regaining power on August 15 and capturing Kabul. They repeatedly assured that they wanted to establish an “all-inclusive” government. But the deputy head of the Taliban’s political bureau in Qatar went against their promises through statements to the BBC.

When asked about the upcoming government, Sher Mohammed Abbas Stanakzai, who may be unveiled on Friday, hinted that “Will not be” Women were appointed to ministers or positions of responsibility, but only at lower levels.
