Destroyed building near Miami, “Accelerated” by the “collapse” that caused the deaths of many of its occupants, the building’s co-owners informed the Assembly President in April.

Avoidable drama

In a letter sent on April 9 addressing the co-owners’ meeting, the situation is deteriorating. Since 2018, “the collapse of concrete has accelerated and the condition of the roof has deteriorated significantly,” Jean Wodnicki, president of the Co-Owners Association, said in the letter.

A report on the condition of the building in 2018 itself documented “major structural damage” as well as “cracks” in the foundation of the building in documents released by Surfside City.

“The waterproofing and access road to the side of the swimming pool (…) has outdated its lifespan, so it must be completely removed and replaced,” wrote Frank Morabito, an expert on the document, claiming the repairs. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniela Levine Kawa said Monday that the lack of “time, however, raises the risk of collapse and that a comprehensive and thorough investigation into the causes that led to this tragedy will take place.”
