Assassination of DRC McGee | Our story | Chronicles | Right

The trial of Patrick James Wheeler began in Ottawa Court on September 7, 1868, at 10:25 am; William Buell Richards is the chairman of the Chief Justice of Queens’ Bench. On the right, an observer: Judge Christopher Armstrong of Carlton County Court. The crown attorney is Irishman James O’Reilly, whose only assistant is his lawyer, Robert Lees. The two are facing strong opposition, including five lawyers. Not only is the number of these defenders surprising, but their appearance is causing a real stir among the audience, and for good reason. The first is one of the best lawyers in Canada: Hilliard Cameron. Yet this lawyer is no less than the Grand Master of the Orange Order of British North America, an organization of anti-Catholic Irish fanatics. Ten years ago, Orangeman Cameron successfully argued that McGee had been attacked during the riots in Toronto. They estimate that the angry Orangeman accused Cameron of defending Wheeler for $ 10,000! The second is Ontario Provincial Secretary Matthew Crooks Cameron. Five months ago, Cameron signed a statement promising a $ 3,500 reward for his arrest of McGee’s killer.
