The first – and yet – unique – environmental agreement to protect the human rights of environmental activists came into force on Thursday (22). The agreement aims to protect the environment and the health of the people, especially the locals. The agreement also aims to promote public participation in environmental issues, access to information and justice.
Brazil does not abide by the agreement
The agreement, created in 2018 in the city of Escas, Costa Rica, was initially signed by 21 countries. At the time, Brazil was one of the signatories to the treaty, but it was not recognized.

For the agreement to take effect, at least 11 countries are required to ratify the agreement. By 2020, only Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Nicaragua, Panama, St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Uruguay have confirmed commitments.
The deal went ahead after the accession of Mexico and Argentina. Recognition was deposited at the UN on January 22 this year – a document demonstrating the commitment of the signatory countries.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a recorded message that the agreement “comes into force to cover climate change, biodiversity loss and natural pollution, and opens the door to sustainable and vibrant regulation.” Environment.
In a statement, the UN Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACR) encouraged non-compliant countries.
