KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 15 – The first Malaysian Royal Professor to be appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya, Ungu Abdul Aziz Abdul Hameed, has served the longest ten years today.

Ungu Aziz, the father of former Bank Negara Malaysian Governor Tan Sethi Akhtar, has been admitted to Prince Court Hospital. He died at 4.30 pm today.

Aziz served in the UNM between 1968 and 1988. Received the title of Royal Professor in 1978 – the only Malaysian to hold this position.

He taught economics there and was the dean of the Faculty of Arts and later the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administration.

He has received numerous awards from France, including the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Sacred Treasure (Japan), and the Tun Abdul Razak Fa Foundation Foundation Award (Malaysia).

One of his most important contributions was the Lembaga Tabung Haji. It was established to fund Muslims to travel and perform their Hajj.

He was born on January 28, 1922, in London, England, before spending his entire childhood in Johor Bar.

His alma mater includes the English College in Johor Bahru, Raffles College in Singapore and Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.

Sheriff Asa Mohammed Alsagoff, better known as Noraza Abdul Aziz, his ex-wife and mother to Sethi, died in 2012.
