Slaven Bilick believes West Brom deserve something from the loss to United in Newcastle, but Baggis’ boss lamented Dwight Gayle’s winning goal.

The Magpies took a 1-0 lead after Miguel Almiron calmly overtook goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the 19th minute.

West Brom, who have won just one game each season, are back in the game with a decent draw after half time through Darnell Furlong.

In the second half, Steve Bruce made two major changes, bringing in Gayle in the 69th minute and throwing Jacob Murphy in the final 10 minutes of the game.

With Jamal Lewis and Emil Kraft backing out, Newcastle had only one recognized defender on the field – Sierra Clarke, but the gamble soon paid off.

Murphy Gayle came out with a superb cross and the striker gave Newcastle a header from the bar to put them ahead in the 82nd minute.

When Bilick recognized the quality of the delivery and finish, he was disappointed to be defending the team after West Brom bosses went 5-4-1 in an attempt to stop the tide.

He told reporters in Zoom after the 2-1 defeat. “It was again a game of small margins.

“We have to admit that this is a two-part game. In the first half, they scored very early – incredibly early – you had to do well in stopping the long ball from a situation, and then, in particular, we lost that challenge.

“After that, their physique, especially the up front, their quality was better than ours, which gave them a few dangerous situations and they were physically stronger in the first half.

“We made some changes in the second half, but it was a change of courage, a change of mood, we were good.

“We scored the goal and in those pockets we were getting into their last third situation. We didn’t always play in front of them or wide, but we were getting it. [Matt] Phillips and Conor Gallagher When you violate their circumstances, you expect to create clear opportunities out of dangerous situations.

“We did not do it enough, and again, we abandoned a goal that we knew we had to stop, so we changed the system a few minutes ago. We wanted to stop their crosses and have enough bodies in the box to face that cross when we did not stop it.

“We can talk about a good cross and a good finish, but we have to end it. When the cross comes, you still have three center backs and you have to deal with that ball well.

“Again, this is very disappointing. Very good margin but it went to the opponent and we just go home. It’s very disappointing because I think we deserve something from that game.”
