The latest figures from the World Health Organization show that Ireland is one of only four countries in Europe, with a seven-day drop in the number of covid-19 cases compared to last week.

The National Public Health Emergency Team said Ireland’s progress was encouraging and weak and needed to be sustained.

The World Health Organization’s weekly figures show a seven – day drop of 36% this week.

Twenty-four other European countries recorded similar increases.

Ireland is also ranked 20th out of 28 European countries in terms of rates, with only eight other countries having seven days of virus infection.

The deteriorating situation in Europe is a matter of concern here, said HSE Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Colm Henry informed the Department of Health last night.

He said progress was weak and that Ireland was only a few weeks away from overcrowding health care systems.

However, now all the key indicators are starting to look more positive for the country.

Case numbers have dropped overall, the R number now stands at one, and confirmed cases now have fewer close relationships.

Admission to hospital and intensive care is increasing more slowly than in previous weeks.

However, there are concerns that the number of cases in the elderly is on the rise, and Philip Nolan, professor of epidemiological modeling at NPEET, has warned that efforts to control the virus must continue.
