The woman was arrested in connection with the theft of grocery vouchers from letter boxes

SINGAPORE: A 37-year-old woman has been arrested for stealing 2020 grocery vouchers from letter boxes in a residential block in Tova Pao, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said.

Police have asked people to collect their vouchers “as soon as possible” following similar incidents elsewhere.

Police said last Sunday that someone had tampered with the letter boxes in a block with Lorong 7 To Payoi.

Authorities arrested the woman on the same day in Lorong 7 To Pao, with the help of an investigation and images from police cameras.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the young woman stole 2020 budget grocery vouchers from letter boxes other than her own,” SPF said in a news release on Tuesday (October 13).

A day later, police said in a Facebook post that they had received reports of similar incidents in other residential areas and were investigating these cases as well.

A statement from Singpost said Tuesday morning that several letter boxes in Redhill had been “forcibly opened”.

The affected blocks are:

– Blocks 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, Lencock Bahru

– Blocks 71 and 72, Redhill Road

– Blocks 89 and 90, close to Redhill

“The emergency response team was dispatched immediately and found that the doors of some of the letterboxes were left unattended,” said Robin Go, group chief brand and communications officer at Singh Post.

The master door of the nine letterbox cages was locked and secured. Upon closer inspection, scratches, dents, and other signs of damage were found in the open letterboxes.

“After our postman left the area at 1300 hours on October 12, 2020, we confirmed through an internal inspection that there was a risk of vandalism and theft,” Go said.

He added that all the mails inside the damaged letterboxes have been secured by the Singpost staff and they will be personally delivered to the doorsteps of the victims.

“We will contact the police and provide full assistance in their investigation.”

SPF advised those eligible for grocery vouchers to collect the letterbox “as soon as possible” and to ensure that the letterbox is always safe.

“If you suspect that your vouchers have been stolen, please file a police report immediately and contact the Grocery Voucher Hotline on 1800-2222-888 to cancel or replace your vouchers. Voice vouchers cannot be redeemed, ”the SPF said.

Theft is punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine or both.
