A former Austin Public Library official is considering a criminal case after authorities accused him of fraudulently stealing at least $ 1.3 million in printer toner and reselling it online.

Randall Nelson White has been charged with theft and is a first-degree offender because the amount he took was more than $ 200,000. A background search shows White, 54, has been arrested several times this month in connection with a burglary case in the mid-1980s.

“We are investigating the allegations and we’ll work with the district attorney’s office to resolve this,” White’s attorney, Bill Hines, said.

The theft was discovered by the city’s auditor’s office, who determined that White had misused a library credit card to buy electronic devices and household items. The findings were sent to the Austin Police Department.

The auditor’s office reported Monday morning. The supervision of the library management allowed the theft to go unnoticed.

“The library’s poor practices and procedures allowed White to steal from the city during his administration, which led to the department’s waste and overcharging,” the report said. “White took advantage of Monica McClure’s poor reviews of former supervisors Victoria Rieger and contract management specialist Monte McClure.

As an accounting associate, White was responsible for making and approving purchases, cash receipts, billing, and other accounting transactions, the report said.

The auditor’s office said White had resigned in exchange for an unrelated issue ending in August 2019.

Due to previous theft cases, the court found White to be a regular offender and the minimum sentence was up to 25 years in prison.
