[아이뉴스24 정종오 기자] Artemis I, an unmanned lunar orbiter, is expected to launch on the 14th. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will hold a briefing session on the matter at 1 a.m. KST on the 4th. It was even predicted that the launch this year will be difficult as the launch has been delayed several times.

If Artemis I launches successfully on the 14th, it will make a round-trip flight to the Moon in about 5-25 days, then depart on December 9 over the Pacific Ocean. Korea is also involved in the Artemis project. It is a ‘global project’ with 21 countries participating not only in Korea, but all over the world.

Meanwhile, Artemis I was scheduled to launch on September 27. The launch pad was withdrawn from the launch pad as it neared the launch site in Florida, USA, which was accompanied by rain and strong winds. It was then taken to the Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center. Earlier, the launch was delayed twice and exposed several problems.

The Artemis project has three phases. Artemis launched this time is an ‘unmanned orbiter’. There are no astronauts in the Orion spacecraft. Artemis II, scheduled for launch in 2024, is a manned lunar orbiter. This is a plan in which astronauts fly in orbit and return to Earth instead of landing on the Moon on their own.

Finally, Artemis III, expected to take place in 2025, is a program that will land humans on the moon again after 50 years since 1972, carrying astronauts. NASA announced that if all three phases are successful, the first woman and an astronaut of color will land on the moon.

One of Artemis’s missions this time is to gather basic information that would allow humans to settle on the moon for a long time. It does this by creating a bridgehead, like the accompanying technology drawings, that would allow humanity to advance to Mars, which is farther than the Moon.

Artemis I, scheduled for launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, US, will carry the Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion spacecraft. This means that before humans land on the surface of the moon, they undergo two tests, one in lunar orbit and one in human orbit.

When humans land on the moon again in 2025, they plan to use rover robots to study the lunar surface. It plans to send astronauts to new locations, starting with the moon’s south pole. “On the lunar surface, astronauts will create new waves of space exploration, including scientific payloads and technology demonstrations,” NASA said. We will step into it,” he added.
